Founded in 1976, Wahgi Mek Plantations Limited quickly rose to prominence as one of Papua New Guinea’s largest and most respected coffee exporters. Operating across 13–15 plantations in the fertile Waghi Valley, we played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s coffee industry, driving rural development, and creating sustainable livelihoods for thousands of people. Our reputation for producing high-quality Arabica coffee beans earned us recognition both locally and internationally.

Wahgi Mek Plantations Limited was formally established and quickly rose to prominence as one of Papua New Guinea’s largest coffee exporters. With 13–15 plantations across the fertile Waghi Valley, WMPL became a cornerstone of the national coffee industry, creating jobs, supporting communities, and building a reputation for producing high-quality Arabica coffee for global markets.
After two decades of success, the company ceased operations due to prolonged management challenges and unresolved landowner disputes. This led to the dormancy of most plantations, halting exports and leaving vast agricultural potential untapped for over 20 years. Despite inactivity, Wahgi Mek remained a symbol of the region’s coffee heritage and future possibilities.
With the efforts of the Jiwaka Provincial Government, local-level leaders, and national stakeholders, Wahgi Mek Plantations was formally re-registered with the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) in February 2025. This revival marks a new chapter of growth—replanting estates, creating jobs, and once again positioning Wahgi Mek as a driver of economic progress and a supplier of premium coffee.
To restore Wahgi Mek Plantations as a leading coffee producer and exporter, empowering farmers, creating jobs, and contributing to the economic and social development of Jiwaka Province and Papua New Guinea.
To position Wahgi Mek coffee as a globally recognized premium brand—known for quality, sustainability, and community-driven values—while becoming a model for agricultural revival in the Pacific.
At Wahgi Mek Plantations, quality is at the heart of everything we do. Grown in the fertile soils of the Waghi Valley at altitudes of 1,500–1,800 meters, our coffee cherries develop rich flavors and unique profiles that meet the strictest international standards. Through careful rehabilitation of our estates, investment in modern pulping facilities, and training for local farmers, we ensure every lot reflects consistency, traceability, and excellence.
The current shareholders include representatives all of four (4) Local-level Governments (LLGs) in the Jiwaka Province, specifically from Nondugul, Minj, Kudjip, and Banz. This community-based ownership model reflects the company’s commitment to inclusive development and local empowerment.
